Accreditation

Reverend George A. Brown Memorial School was reaccredited by the MIDDLE STATES ASSOCIATION of the COMMISSION on ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS in April 2004.  The reaccreditation process ensures the school works toward further development and growth.  Our project for reaccreditation explained how the infusion of technology and non traditional ways of teaching and the special emphasis on staff development have enhanced the curriculum.

Rev. Brown was named a STAR SCHOOL (2004-2005) by the Paterson Diocese based on improvements in math, science and technology that have increased student achievement.

Award winning BEST PRACTICES programs include:

The 1998-1999 World War II and Holocaust unit which depicts diversity through an interdisciplinary approach and recognized exemplary teaching practices.

The 2000-2001 fifth grade cross-curricular unit which addressed all learners through its multiple intelligence activities.

The school-wide 2001-2002 "Creating Programs of Nonviolence" that heighten student's awareness of bullying behavior and help them handle these incidents.

Annually, 20-30% of seventh graders qualify as Johns-Hopkins scholars having achieved standardized test scores in the 97th, 98th, or 99th percentile. The Academic Bowl team holds an impressive record for First Place in county-wide competitions each year.

In the Knowledge Master, a computerized academic bowl, our seventh and eighth graders' scores exceed the national average in the Middle School Division. Seventh and eighth graders have placed in the top 20% in the Algebra I Mathfax contest.

Cultivating and honing language skills through a Forensic Program in the county has enhanced the students' life skills and contributed to the overall success of the language arts program.

In recent years, students have had poetry published in the Anthology of Poetry by Young Americans and the Celebration of New Jersey's Young Poets. Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth graders have placed regularly in the annual Sparta Poetry Contest open to all schools in the county.

Students in Advanced Language Arts classes are consistently placed in Honors English classes at the high school level. An accelerated mathematics program, beginning at the sixth grade level, enables advanced students to place in second year high school math courses as freshmen.

Annually, graduates of Rev. Brown are listed among the Advanced Placement Scholars, National Merit Commended Scholars, and the National Merit finalists on the college level Advanced Placement Examinations.

Through a Litton Grant obtained in 1997-1998, Rev. Brown School was acknowledged for its efforts to advance the integration of technology into the language arts curriculum at the middle school level.
