In an effort to enrich our students curriculum with quality programs, Reverend Brown, Immaculate Conception and St. Joseph School continue our academic partnership with Pope John High School. This is our second year offering the Advanced Academic Achievement Program. This program was developed by the administration and Math/Science teachers of our elementary schools and Pope John High School. It was introduced to a select group of the most talented eighth grade students identified by the three elementary schools for the 2008/2009 school.
The curriculum focuses on subject content, instruction, and pedagogy. Currently the courses offered are Honors Physical Science and Honors Algebra I.
The selection criteria was based on multiple measures, included but not limited to; achievement test scores, demonstrated performance, as evidenced by grades, performance, teacher assessment and recommendations. Although standardized test scores are a part of the criteria, under no circumstances are selections based solely on those scores.
These Math and Science courses are designed to challenge our gifted students, and are not only vigorous, but require dedication and hard work to ensure success. Any student, who has a significant decrease in their academic performance and/or cannot maintain the pace of the classes during this program, will not be allowed to continue. Also, any student whose attendance is not exemplary is asked to return to the elementary school. Grades and performance assessments are determined by the teachers at Pope John and provided to the sending school, where they are averaged on the students report card.
